The police officer shot outside a Sikh temple in Wisconsin last summer is retiring next month.

Lieutenant Brian Murphy was the first officer to respond to the temple in Oak Creek after a gunman killed six worshippers. The lone gunman shot Murphy a dozen times, but he survived.

Murphy was on medical leave while recovering from wounds to his head, neck and body. He appeared at the State of the Union speech in February as a guest of Michelle Obama and was recognized as a Hometown Hero by the Wisconsin State Assembly in April.

Murphy will retire June 12. He says he’s not sure what he’ll do next but says he may consider teaching.
