More details have been released in the drowning of a man who broke through an icy pond in Maple Grove.

Witnesses told police 20-year-old Andrew Pitts of Brooklyn Park was intoxicated when he walked out onto the partially-frozen pond and broke through on April 26, and later died.

Through further investigation from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, they determined a bartender at Claddagh’s Irish Pub had served alcohol to Pitts.

Witnesses told investigators the bartender didn’t ask for Pitts’ ID and that Pitts was a friend of the bartender.

The bartender, 21-year-old Rebekah Michal Thomas of Maple Grove, has now been charged with selling liquor to a person under the age 21, which is a gross misdemeanor.

The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
