A 64-year-old Brainerd man is dead after a canoe capsized on the Gull River north of Baxter, authorities said Sunday, and a 4-year-old Arizona boy was rescued by people who live near the river.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of the capsized canoe and two people in the water shortly after 2 p.m. near Barbeau Road.

After hearing a cry for help, residents near the river responded and were able to pull 4-year-old Thadeus Strader from the river, the sheriff's office said. He was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital but later released.

Paramedics and law enforcement officers pulled the man from the water downriver. He was unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was identified as 64-year-old Peter Johnson of Brainerd.

The man and boy were both wearing life jackets.

The incident remains under investigation.
