The Prairie Island Nuclear Plant opened its doors Thursday to give a look at a rare event in the plant's history.
Reactor number two went online Dec. 1 back in 1974. According to Xcel Energy, they were able to get 40 years of operation out of the original steam generators.
The generators were made in France and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. They were then transferred to a barge for the trip up the Mississippi River.
The entire project to replace the original generators and to get them inside is $280 million.
The old steam generators will be replaced with new ones starting in September.
