Vikings fans flock to the Metrodome to be a source of strength for the team. Along the way some bring backpacks, bags and even coolers to add to the good times.

Jeff Anderson of the Vikings says that come this season all of that and more won't be allowed.
"This really was a conversation that started with the Stadium Security Committee of the NFL back in May. Then it went to a vote of all NFL owners. It had the unanimous support of all 32 NFL teams," Anderson said.

The Vikings strongly encourage fans not to bring any type of bag that are outlined as not permissible. Fans can carry the following bags, containers and packages:

Prohibited items include purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, seat cushions, computer bags and camera bags.

Fans can continue to tailgate in parking lots.

The Vikings have enhanced its safety plans in the past with additional measures, such as pat downs, bag checks and metal detectors.

"Our fans deserve to be in a safe and secure environment," said Jeffrey Miller, NFL Vice President and Chief Security Officer, in a statement.

"Public safety is our top priority. This will make the job of checking items much more efficient and effective. We will be able to deliver a better and quicker experience at the gates and also provide a safer environment. We appreciate our fans' cooperation."

A KSTP crew stopped by the Twins game at Target Field Thursday to see what Minnesotans think of the new policy.

"(I would) try to carry something smaller, wouldn't be able to bring my kids," one fan said.

"I don't have a problem with it because I would rather be safe than sorry," another said.

The new security measures will begin at the first pre-season game this year, Aug. 9 against the Houston Texans.

This public safety measure is being successfully used at other large venues, according to the Vikings. The University of Michigan, Penn State University and Michigan State University do not permit any bags, while the TD Garden in Boston only permits clutch bags.
