The early Friday morning storms lit up the night sky with lightning. There were numerous reports of transformers blowing and houses catching on fire, possibly from the lightning strikes.
One home in Minnetonka was badly damaged after it went up in flames.
The Minnetonka Police Chief says lightning hit the west side of the home on Ashbourne Road around 2:30 a.m. and traveled across the roof, causing it to collapse. The fire then spread to the first floor on the other side of the house and to the garage, damaging the vehicles inside.
The homeowner heard the lightning strike but didn’t realize it hit her house until a neighbor knocked on the door and alerted her to the flames. The homeowner escaped safely. A cat and dog that were missing have been found.
The woman’s boyfriend said she is still very shaken.
