Same sex couples like Mike Stewart and John Larsen of Minneapolis are rejoicing after Wednesday's Supreme Court decision on the Defense of Marriage Act.
The two came together in a civil union performed in Vermont in 2005.
A year later they had a wedding ceremony here in Minnesota.
They now plan to get married legally when Minnesota's same sex marriage law goes into effect later this year.
The couple says they are shocked with Wednesday's decision saying they never thought this ruling would come so soon.
"I thought I would see it in my lifetime, but if I stopped to think about it, I thought it would be toward the end of my life," says Stewart.
"The tide is turning and this is what it feels like. It's cool," adds Larsen.
Larsen said the work doesn't stop here though. He wants same sex couples in all 50 states to have the same benefits he and his partner will now have.
