WWII Vets Dying Before Realizing Dream

A nonprofit organization called Freedom Flight has chartered seven flights that have taken 470 Central Minnesota veterans to see the World War II memorial at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Veterans who recently returned from a trip say it was one of the best experiences of their lives.

The veterans are treated like royalty; they're greeted in Washington by Minnesota's senators and complete their trip in just one day so no one with medical concerns has to stay overnight.

However, organizers say WWII veterans scheduled to go on some of these trips die before ever actually making the trip.

A handful of WWII vets in Minnesota have still not had a chance to see the memorial. That's why an urgent fundraising effort is underway so one more flight can be chartered.

Each flight costs about $90,000.
