Be ready for back-ups and big delays if your Fourth of July holiday plans take you near the I-694 highway construction project between I-35W and Highway 100.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says some projects in the area will be moved aside to spare motorists extended delays leaving town; work on Highway 100, Highway 169 and on Interstate 94 to St. Cloud will be cleared away to allow for better traffic flow.
MnDOT Communications Specialist Kent Barnard says larger projects are more difficult to push aside, "Some of these projects… when we have the traffic control devices placed… there's not much we can do to open things up for weekend holiday travelers."
MnDOT recommends driving earlier or later in the day to avoid the worst congestion and points out that because the fourth is on a Thursday, traffic departing the metro area could be dispersed over a few days, but the return is likely to see higher traffic volumes and greater delays.
