INTERVIEW: BBQ Food Safety Tips

This Fourth of July many people will take to the grill for some home cooked goods, but the FDA wants to remind everyone to make sure the food you're preparing is safe to eat.

When cooking with raw meat be sure to clean knives and cutting boards before using them to cut other foods. Also, keeping the meat separate from other foods during preparation can prevent the spread of bacteria.

If hamburgers are on the menu for the Fourth, the FDA recommends bringing the meat to a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. For chicken, the proper cooking temperature is 165 F.

Mike Taylor, a spokesperson with the FDA, spoke with KSTP's Brad Sattin about these food safety tips and more.
