Victim of South Minneapolis Deadly Shooting Identified

Police have arrested two men suspected of fatally shooting one man and wounding another in South Minneapolis.

Twenty-four-year-old Diamond Lee Jamal Griffin and 22-year-old Ryan Grant are awaiting criminal charges, according to Minneapolis police. 

Police say the shooting happened around 11:21 p.m. Monday, July 8, on the 3600 block of Columbus Avenue.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Francisco Benitez Hernandez of Minneapolis. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, Hernandez died from gunshot wounds and the death has been ruled a homicide.

The homicide is the fifth of the year in the third precinct and the 16th in all of Minneapolis.

More violence happened in the same neighborhood less than a month ago. About a block away, the city’s 12th homicide of the year happened June 17 when 35-year-old Daniel Maniece was killed in a shooting on the 3500 block of Chicago Avenue South.

At this time last year, there were two homicides in the third precinct and 14 citywide.
