Journalists have gotten a firsthand look at the location where 19 elite firefighters were engulfed in flames last month in Arizona while protecting the town of Yarnell.
Authorities allowed an inspection of a basin surrounded on three sides by charred, boulder-strewn mountains. The site is marked by an American flag. And a makeshift memorial includes a Granite Mountain Hotshots T-shirt hanging on a burned cactus.
It's believed the erratic blaze shifted toward the victims, forcing them to retreat into the bowl beneath the mountains. The surrounding hillsides were way too steep to even attempt to outrun the flames.
