A Corcoran family says 2-year-old Henry Gonzales Lucas was taken far too soon. The family is remembering the little boy, who they describe as rambunctious and loving.
He was hit and killed by a car Thursday night as he played outside his home. The family transported him themselves to Maple Grove Hospital.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said cause of death was blunt force with head injuries.
It's difficult to say if it would have made a difference, but EMTs say this highlights a trend: people are often too hesitant to call an ambulance, whether it's for financial reasons or something else.
"Sometimes they are frightened or in a panic and think it can be faster than waiting for professionals," says Robert Ball with Hennepin County Medical Center EMS.
Ball says you may not always need an ambulance, but you should always call one and let the experts decide. Not only can they start treatment immediately, they can decide what hospital you need, depending on the emergency.
Police collected evidence at the home, which is part of the Maple Hills Estate community on Maple Hills Road.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office doesn't believe alcohol was a factor in the incident.
The family speaks Spanish so there is a language barrier in talking with authorities. The sheriff's office is using two interpreters in their investigation.
Corcoran is located in Hennepin County west of Maple Grove.
