Washburn High School
The new principal of Washburn High School was only on the job for four days before he was removed from the position.
Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson says Patrick Exner will no longer be the principal. He started work at the school last Sunday and was put on leave last Tuesday after allegations surfaced that he was involved in changing student answers on a state exam at his previous job.
“I believe that Washburn High School needs a leader who will accelerate the positive momentum that has been building over the past few years,” Johnson said in a letter to Washburn families. “The issues surrounding Mr. Exner’s hiring have created an additional distraction that we cannot allow to continue.”
Exner replaced former Washburn principal Carol Markham-Cousins. She was reassigned after a doll-hanging incident, a walkout, and a sit-in during the last school year.
Assistant Principal Linda Conley will now lead the school as interim principal with support from Assistant Principal Nilo Guanzon.
Parents can attend a meeting to learn more about plans for the upcoming school year. It takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Washburn auditorium.
