Popular discount airline Spirit Airlines is adding four new destinations.
The new stops are in Phoenix, Orlando, Tampa and Los Angeles, which is in addition to the five other direct flights Spirit already offers. The new flights will be available seasonally from early November until the end of April.
The company made the announcement Monday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Spirit Airlines wants to be the airline Minnesota families use for winter getaways and spring break vacations.
“The focus for many airlines is on the high-end corporate business traveler, and at Spirit we’re more focused on people who are going on vacation, visiting friends and relatives, and smaller business travel, and so we’re able to fill in the gap,” Vice President Mark Kopczak said.
With many of the larger airlines merging and consolidating, Spirit Airlines says they see a lot of potential growth in the Twin Cities. Their research shows fares are going up in the Minneapolis market, and Spirit wants to be an alternate option with lower prices.
Spirit started serving the Twin Cities in June of 2012 with flights to Chicago, Dallas, Denver and Las Vegas. They are up to 10 total destinations, with Fort Lauderdale and Fort Meyers available in the winter months.
