A Brooklyn Center police officer shot and killed a suspect after a traffic stop Thursday at Shingle Creek Parkway.

The incident started as a traffic stop around 2:20 a.m. near the westbound entrance onto Interstate 94 and Interstate 694, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. The stop escalated into a struggle between the officer and suspect before the fatal shooting.

At least two dozen squad cars and a crime lab unit responded to the scene, as well as police from Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities on Friday focused their investigation on a blue minivan. They also blocked off the intersection, which affected traffic in the area.

The sheriff's office has not released additional details at this time.
