MnDOT Crews Face Deadline for Construction in Minn.

Coming home from the cabin, you may be faced with the decision to either stay on I-94 or take Highway 10.

But before you head back, remember, six miles of Highway 10 is under construction from Anoka through Coon Rapids, and it could add as much as an hour to your road trip.

On Eastbound 694, drivers are dealing with reduced lanes and even some exits that are completely closed.

"There's no way to open those lanes up before the weekend," said Kent Barnard with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

MnDOT crews are up against the clock.  After a slow start to construction season due to wet weather and cold temperatures, crews are struggling to get everything done before winter.

"We need to take advantage of all the days we have left this construction season," said Barnard.  "We didn't get off to the most auspicious start this year."

That means leaving roads blocked and lanes shut down, even for this last scramble up to the lake.

Barnard admits, much like your commute to the cabin, things are moving slowly.

You may also notice some deserted work areas as you head out of town. That's because MnDOT is taking crews off the roads throughout the Labor Day weekend. Crews will be back at it on Tuesday, which for many in the Metro, is the first day of school.
