Police say a man is custody after he took two employees hostage inside a Burnsville gas station during an attempted robbery Saturday evening.

The man was armed with a shotgun and fired one shot into the ceiling, according to police. The two employees were not hurt.

Around 6 p.m., officers responded to the Holiday gas station near the intersection of Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue and set up a perimeter, blocking off traffic on nearby roads.

There was a short standoff, but the man came out of the store after an officer spoke with him on the phone and convinced him to surrender. He did so peacefully, and was then taken into custody.

As a precaution, a bomb squad was called in to investigate a suspicious package found in the parking lot. It turned out to be nothing and may be unrelated to the incident, police say.

Police have not yet released the suspect's name or any other identifying information. They also have not detailed the charges he will face.
