Fall is actually one of the best times of the year to plant a tree in your yard, but there are some things to consider before you start to dig.

Removing a circle of sod about four to six feet in diameter is ideal before you plant, and Angie Hicks, founder of Angie’s list said location is crucial.

“Sometimes people make the mistake of putting them too close to the driveway which can cause their driveway to buckle or foundation to crack,” Hicks said.

Calling 811 can help homeowners figure out where utility lines are so that they aren’t hit, but if someone still wants help, they can call an arborist for help.

“A common mistake is the planting depth,” arborist Jeff Gatewood said. The top of the soil should be exactly level with the soil in your lawn or even a tiny bit above won’t hurt.”
