About 150 people attended a town hall meeting Wednesday at Eden Prairie High School to learn about drug abuse prevention
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office hosted the event, which included substance abuse prevention experts, young speakers who discussed their addictions and law enforcement officials who talked about the relationship between prescription abuse and heroin use.
Speakers also described ways to prevent addiction and provided helpful resources to parents. More topics included how to prepare to talk to children about drug use, how to spot signs of drug use and the root causes of addiction.
The prevention program "Know the Truth," which is part of the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge, helped organize the event.
According to a survey by Teen Challenge, 10 percent of Eden Prairie High School students reported having used illegal drugs. Of those students who have used illegal drugs, 60 percent abused prescription drugs.
