A popular St. Paul garden center that has been in business for more than a century will soon close. Linder's Greenhouse & Garden Center, located off West Larpenteur Avenue, is now winding down business.
Over 103 years and several generations of the Linder family, the gardens and greenhouses have not only survived but prospered.
"Since my great grandfather came over and we started with celery and worked our way up to flowers and what we've been doing for the past 20 some years. And unfortunately, closing our doors as of 2013," said David Linder, Garden Center Assistant Manager.
Management has not yet released a closing date, but says the store will be closing in the coming weeks and months.
"It's hard, it's really hard, this was everything our family's worked for," Linder said.
That passion hasn't gone unnoticed in the Metro.
"Linder's is like when I can't get to church, it's the next best place because when you walk in, the colors and the smell," said Linder's customer Catherine Turner.
As turner overloaded her car with flowers, she realized losing Linder's will not only touch her but her place of worship as well.
"I can't imagine where I'm going to be buying the poinsettias for the church now. I'm devastated, I'm shocked," Turner said.
Management says several factors led to the decision to close, including a decline in discretionary spending.
"The way the economy was, people have had to save more money, we understand that," Linder said.
The Linders also had this message to their customers:
"Thanks so much to the community for all the support, and we're sorry we're not going to be here to beautify your backyards," Linder said.
A couple-dozen full-time employees work at Linder's. They have all been notified about the closure.
