A look at the winners of Nobel Prize in chemistry:
Martin Karplus, a professor of chemistry at the Universite de Strasbourg, France, and Harvard University; Michael Levitt, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine; and Arieh Warshel, a distinguished professor of chemistry at the University of Southern California.
For laying the foundations that enable scientists to create computer models to understand and predict complex chemical processes such as a car catalyst's purification of exhaust fumes or photosynthesis in green leaves.
It allowed chemists to move from painstakingly building models of molecules using sticky balls to simulating these molecules using computers, vastly speeding up research into new drugs and devices.
