Nationwide, Hispanic enrollment at universities in the U.S. roughly mirrors the Hispanic population of 16.9 percent.
But in Minnesota, the Hispanic population is just 4.9 percent. Hispanic enrollment at the University of Minnesota has historically been roughly 2.5 percent.
It's why university officials have restructured their recruitment efforts.
The effort appears to be paying off as Hispanic enrollment has increased to more than 3 percent of the student population.
More work is to be done though, as the university is now working to better connect with Hispanic high school students.
The U of M is also recruiting undocumented students. The Minnesota Dream Act, which passed this year, makes undocumented students eligible for in-state tuition and scholarships.
