Twins' Pelfrey Expected to Hit Free Agent Market

Unless the Twins make a substantial offer in the coming days, which doesn't appear likely, starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey will hit the free-agent market.

There's been dialogue about an extension, but an agreement isn't close.

"His agent (Scott Boras) will want to field what's out there for him," general manager Terry Ryan said during a phone conversation Wednesday afternoon. "When a guy has free agent status and he's this close, unless you overwhelm a guy, the chance of him not exploring what's out there is minimal."

Boras, a notoriously tough negotiator, will presumably seek a sizeable raise, since 2014 will be a second year removed from Tommy John surgery for Pelfrey.

Pelfrey made $4 million this year, pitching better the last month-plus of the season. Overall, he went 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA in 152 2/3 innings for the Twins. His longest outing was seven innings.
