Domestic violence affects about one in three women at some point in their lives and Thursday the community came out to remind people that it remains a serious problem in Minnesota.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On Thursday, the community gathered at St. Paul Fire Station 1 to demonstrate their unity and commitment to end the problem.

"For each of these tragedies, it re-enforces our collective determination to never again have to lose a member of our community to domestic violence," said Ramsey County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt.

The event organizers hung up 18 shirts, one for every Minnesotan they say was killed as a result of domestic violence.
