A gas station in the metro area is selling a gallon of regular unleaded for $2.99. While gas did drop below $3 dollars a gallon for a short time early this year, the average price of gas in Minnesota hasn't been below $3 dollars since January of 2011.

Joe Farah is one of the partners at the Smart Stop station at 27th and Johnson in Northeast Minneapolis. He says his lower price is a way to show his appreciation for his regulars. "Just saying thanks for the customers, you know, we came along, people are happy, we're happy. Hopefully its good for all of us," he said.

Wendy Johnson lives in Northeast Minneapolis. Even though the price of gas at the Smart Stop may have only dropped a couple of cents, Johnson says it's nice to drop below the $3 line. "It's just huge," she said. "You feel like you're getting such a deal. It's a big deal for it to go under $3."

Farah doesn't know how much longer he'll be selling gas below $3 dollars, but for now he says business is good. He opened for business at 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning and his sign read $2.99.
