Retailers Turn their Attention to the Holiday Season

The mall mayhem used to begin early on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It was tradition to get up early and rush through the doors of stores for Black Friday sales.

But that time has been creeping backward for a few years. First it moved back to midnight, and then 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.

Now, stores across the Twin Cities are opening for shoppers before the Thanksgiving dishes are even done.

KSTP called stores all over the area and found a lot of the big stores at the major shopping centers will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Even though it's just Halloween retailers are thinking about marketing for the holiday season.

"This season is going to be highly promotional and this kicks it off very quickly," said Professor Dave Brennan with the University of St. Thomas.

There are only 26 shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's the shortest number possible.

According to the National Retail Federation, 36 percent of millennials shopped on Thanksgiving Day.
