Howard Weller will realize a dream on Veterans Day in honor of his friends who pioneered the effort.

Weller will offer a few words in a speech as the Sheridan Veterans Memorial at Sheridan Memorial Park is dedicated on Veterans Day. It's a day 18 years in the making.

Years ago a handful of veterans began an effort to build a veterans memorial along the river in Northeast Minneapolis.

However, all of the veterans involved in the original effort have died.

In their absence, Weller took over the effort to raise money for the memorial. With some good breaks and cooperation from the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization, the park and memorial has become a reality.

On Veterans Day Weller will speak to the crowd that gathers at the memorial. He says the veterans who have gone before him would be proud of what he helped them accomplish.

The memorial dedication starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Sheridan Memorial Park. The address is 1300 Water Street, which is just north of the Broadway Avenue Bridge.
