A car drove through the Wells Fargo Winter Skate rink at Rice Park, breaking a pipe and spilling chemicals used to freeze the ice, according to Winter Skate organizers.
Late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, a car drove through a closed street and onto the rink. The car broke through the temporary walls. The pipe has since been repaired.
Winter Skate organizers said the damage was estimated around $3,000.
It is possible the vandal was trying to steal the copper coils in the pipes, officials say. Theft of the coils occurred last year due to the value of the copper they are made from.
However, Winter Park organizers said they believe in this situation, it was just vandalism.
The rink will be ready for its Nov. 30 Grand Opening Celebration, organizers said. It's located next to the historic Landmark Center.
