A western Wisconsin High School teacher is charged with having sex with two of his students.

At his initial appearance on Friday, a Washington County judge set his bail at $150,000 on the condition he would not come into contact with females between the ages of 13 and 18.

Thirty-six-year old Matthew Robert Koenen of Stillwater has been charged in Washington County with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in connection with incidents involving two separate victims in 2012.

According to the criminal complaint, Koenen used his position of authority as a Grantsburg High School history teacher to develop relationships with several female students.

Koenen's wife is also a history teacher at Grantsburg High School. Police say after his wife became suspicious with all the activity on his phone, he got two additional cell phones and established three different email addresses.

The complaint alleges Koenen had sex with one of the victims three to four times in his Stillwater home before she ended the relationship in November or December of 2012. She was 16 at the time, and they started their online relationship when she was 15-years-old.

Koenen also allegedly established a sexual relationship with the other victim from May 2012 until May 2013.

He resigned his teaching position in May 2013.

After leaving Grantsburg, Koenen became a middle school teacher at a Brooklyn Center middle school, according to Fred Fink, head of the criminal division of the Washington County Attorney's Office.

Fink said he was not sure how long Koenen was working at the middle school.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education, Koenen had a valid social studies teaching license that will expire in 2017.
