Friday marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination.

About a year before his death, Kennedy visited the Twin Cities for a political event. While in town, he attended Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Paul in October of 1962.

There's a plaque on a pew in memory of where Kennedy sat for the Sunday service.

Father John Brandes was at that Mass and met President Kennedy. "It was excitement," he said. "He was a hero to us. We all felt very honored to be on hand."

An estimated crowd of 5,000 people filled the church and the streets around the Cathedral to see President Kennedy that day.
