Jeffery Trevino has been sentenced to 27 1/2 years in prison for murdering his wife, Kira Steger.

In September, Trevino was convicted of second-degree unintentional homicide after killing Kira Steger last February; her body was found in the the Mississippi River in May.

Kira Steger's mom, dad, and sisters read emotional impact statements in court before the sentence was handed down Monday. Trevino declined to address the court, saying, "I don't think there is anything I can say."

Kira Steger's mom and sister say they have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder in dealing with the tragic death.

The Steger family pleaded for the judge to sentence Trevino to the maximum sentence.

"If they would have gave him 75 years or 100 years it wouldn't have been enough, because he will eventually get to see the light of day, and my daughter will not. There is not enough time in the world that would have been appropriate enough for me," said Jay Steger, Kira Steger's father.

The judge departed from sentencing guidelines, increasing Trevino's prison time because of what he called "the cold manipulation, the selfishness and the lack of empathy in trying to cover up his crime."
