Seventy-one-year-old Rudolph Poppe of Savage
A man who pleaded guilty to beating his dog with a sledgehammer was sentenced Tuesday.
Seventy-one-year-old Rudolph Poppe was sentenced to 90 in jail and five years probation for hitting his elderly golden retriever several times over the head in the driveway of his home in Savage on July 12. The dog, Mille, had to be euthanized because of its injuries.
Police say they found the dog with a white plastic bag tied over its head and a crushed skull.
Poppe also pleaded guilty to resisting officers' attempts to arrest him after neighbors called 911. He spent 26 days in jail after his arrest.
