A workshop for parents addressing cyber-bullying, social media and sexting will take place at Oak Grove Middle School in Bloomington Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The workshop, referred to as the Parent Academy on Adolescents and Social Media Safety, is hosted by the Bloomington Parent-Teacher-Student Association Council. It will feature Bloomington Police Detective Heather Potter, who is a noted expert on Internet and social media safety.
According to the American Academy of Children and Adolescent Psychiatry, more than 60 percent of teens in the U.S. have at least one social media account. Many spend more than two hours per day on social networking sites.
Adolescents are often victims of cyber-bullying, sharing too much personal information, vulnerability to predatory adults and identity theft.
The workshop will inform parents on how to use the social networking sites safely and appropriately.
