Apple Valley beat highly-ranked DeLaSalle 73-63 Saturday night, however the Islanders were without the services of 6-8 Reid Travis who’s recovering from a foot stress fracture that occurred back in September.

With no inside game, making baskets proved to be a problem for DeLaSalle all night long. While they had good looks, they were only 21 for 56 from the field and worse, only shot 58 percent from the free throw line.

Tyus Jones again proved why he’s one of the best point guards in the country, shooting 10 for 19 from the field, 9 for 11 from the free throw line, had 11 assists and 9 boards. Jones controlled this game from beginning to end because of his ability and willingness to share the ball.

Valley’s freshman Gary Trent was also impressive with his 18 points. 6-10 Brock Bertram experienced foul problems all night for the Eagles playing only 20 minutes, grabbing 11 boards and scored 8 points.

Travis hopes to be ready for the Breakdown Boys Classic on Dec. 14 when the Islanders will play Osseo in a 7:00 p.m. matchup on the main court at Minnetonka High School. Osseo is a power year in and year out and this game could very well be classified as one of the best matchups all year.

Yes, I'd like to see a rematch with Apple Valley and DeLaSalle with both teams at full strength. However, because of Tyus, I think Apple Valley would still win.

Apple Valley will play at Hopkins tonight, and then the Eagles will host national power Chicago’s Whitney Young Thursday, December 12th, in a game to be televised on ESPN2.  Whitney is led by Jahlil Okafor who will play with Tyus Jones at Duke next year.
