A 22-year-old Stillwater man was convicted of "first degree felony assault-great bodily harm" in connection with the death of a 29-year-old Bayport man at a Stillwater bar, according to a court document.

Eric Richard was sentenced to just over six years in the St. Cloud Correctional Facility. He was also ordered to pay $6,500 in restitution.

Adam McCloud hit his head on the floor during a fight over a spilled drink Sept. 28, 2012 at Smalley's Barbeque in downtown Stillwater.

Richard repeatedly punched McCloud in the face and head, causing him to fall to the floor, hitting his head, according to a criminal complaint. McCloud suffered several skull fractures and bleeding in his head. McCloud died at Regions Hospital in St. Paul nearly a week later.

Prosecutors say McCloud fell out of his hospital bed and hit his head before he died.

Richard was initially charged with murder. Prosecutors in Washington County reduced the charges to first-degree assault after a medical examiner said the cause of McCloud's death was inconclusive.
