Two of Minnesota's top five senior squared off at Mpls. Washburn Monday night, where the host Millers defeated the Tartan Titans 79-71. Washburn's 6-3 Chase Coley scored 29 points and added 21 rebounds and 9 blocked shots. Tia Elbert, who led the state in scoring with 36 points per game a year ago, scored 37 to lead Tartan.
Tartan led 11-7 when Coley, guard Lucia Renikoff and reserve forward Natalie Holdahl each scored twice in just two minutes and, suddenly, Washburn led 24-11. It was 44-29 at the half. Coley had 16 points, 14 boards and 4 blocks at intermission, while Elbert had 14 points.
Tartan battled back to within 7 as Elbert scored 11 points in the first 3:30 of the second half. But, at the 4:30 mark, Renikoff, forward Emma Shepherd, Holdahl and Renikoff again (from 3-point range) made four-straight shots to ice it at 76-57.
Renikoff scored 21 for Washburn, while Shepherd and Holdahl also scored in double figures. Only freshman guard Anissa Krause joined Elbert scoring in double figures for Tartan with 17.
Coley made 11-of-25 field goals. Elbert made 11-of-33 and 15-of-18 free throws. Coley blocked Elbert 4 times, but Elbert opened the second half with a put-back off the offensive board over Coley.
