No 2-AAA-ranked Park Center has quietly become one of the younger teams-certainly one of the younger elite teams-in the metro area. There on the floor at the end of the game with (then) No. 3-AAAA-ranked Bloomington Kennedy on Saturday were three freshmen, 6-2 post Mikayla Hayes, 5-5 guard Ann Simonet and 5-4 guard Danielle Schaub.

Fortunately, anchoring the team was Minnesota's No. 2 senior, 5-10 center-forward Cayla McMorris.

"Although we have a younger team," McMorris said, "most of them play on the North Tartan AAU program and have that competitive experience, which helps a lot. We're patient with them, (but) we set the bar high for them because we know what they're capable of."

McMorris had led all scorers and rebounders with 30 and eleven against No. 4-AAAA Centennial two nights previously, which the Pirates lost 83-66. What could she do for an encore?

Well, she again led all scorers, this time with 25 points, twelve of them coming in the final 7:30 as the Pirates struggled to withstand a furious rally by their highly-rated and more experienced opponents. A three at the 7:00 mark made it 49-33. A basket off the glass made it 51-40. A pair of throws made it 55-43. Another three made it 58-45. Finally a lay-up off a coast-to-coast rush after an in-bounds pass from the far baseline made the final score 64-59 with inside of ten seconds left.

Kennedy stars Kenisha Bell and Tonoia Wade are summer teammates of McMorris' at North Tartan. "It's always great being able to play against my AAU teammates," McMorris said. "On the court we're enemies, but off the court we're like sisters. Its always competitive when playing against them, and getting the victory feels great!"
