Students in Newtown, Conn., will be in school on Friday, and extra law enforcement personnel will patrol the town all through the weekend. But overall, people in that small East Coast community are asking for normalcy, consistency and peace.

It's an issue resonating throughout the country, and the one year anniversary of the Newtown shootings brings up old wounds for victims of gun violence here in Minnesota, too.

Protect Minnesota will be commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragic shootings in Newtown Saturday with a few different events.

At 9:30 a.m., people are invited to gather at Westminster Presbyterian in Minneapolis to honor those who have been affected by gun violence. The church is located at 1200 Marquette Ave. in Minneapolis.

At 10 a.m., St. Mary's Episcopal Church's Litany of Reflection will allow people to honor the lives of the 26 victims who were killed. The church is located at 1895 Laurel Ave. in St Paul.

At 11 a.m., an "Unconference" at St. Joan of Arc Church's Hospitality Hall in South Minneapolis invites people to talk about gun violence prevention and commit to action. The church address is 4537 Third Ave. in South Minneapolis.

Because the victims' families are spending the anniversary in private with no public events scheduled Saturday, they are asking people throughout the country to, instead, do an act of kindness -- like donating to a charity or volunteering for the day in remembrance of the victims.
