A shorthanded goal proved to be the difference in a showdown between two of the area's best hockey teams.

Eden Praire and Elk River were both 5-0 entering Thursday's game at Braemar Arena, but Steve Spinner's shorthanded score in the third period gave Eden Prairie the deciding goal in a 3-1 victory.

Eden Prairie would add an empty-net goal by Jack Sullivan in the closing minutes.

Elk River had more shots on goal than Eden Prairie (31-29) but could only muster a Reggie Lutz' put-back goal in the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

Luc Snuggerud scored Eden Prairie's first goal in the second period.

Hill-Murray was the top-ranked team in the latest boy's hockey poll with Elk River second and Eden Prairie third. Eden Prairie might just take over the second spot with the win Thursday night.
