Two Pine County women have each been charged with five felonies and nine misdemeanors related to the abuse and neglect of horses, dogs and other animals located on their properties.

The charges stem from a Sept. 12 search warrant to recover the animals as part of an on-going investigation of abuse and neglect in the care of Kathleen Mary Doenz, 65, and her mother, Gloria Irene Carlson, 86.

According to police, investigators found hundreds of horses, dogs, cats, chickens and other animals in inhumane conditions and deteriorating health on multiple properties owned Doenz and Carlson. Numerous animals had to be euthanized following the seizure.

The Pine County Sheriff's Office, along with veterinarians and animal rescue workers were alerted to the situation by concerned citizens.
