For many Minnesota families, hockey isn’t just a passion – it’s a way of life. Now, one of the biggest hockey events of the year is coming to Minneapolis for the first time.

The Hockey City Classic is part of a winter festival that will consist of a variety of events, including youth, high school and adult hockey events, private ice rentals, public skating and more.

Thursday was the start of 10 days of winter activities leading up to the college hockey double-header next Friday.

Two events took place at TCF Bank Stadium on Thursday night, including "Light the Lamp," where University of Minnesota Director of Athletics Norwood Teague along with Golden Gophers Men’s Coach Don Lucia and Women’s Coach Brad Frost will shoot pucks into the net and "Light the Lamp," signifying the beginning of the 10 days of winter activities.

There will also be the first annual Gopher Hockey Skate with the greats, like Scott Bell, Jim Boo, Bill Butters and others.
