A Minnesota State Trooper is recovering from injuries at home after his squad car was hit in a weather related three-vehicle crash in Minneapolis Friday night.

According to authorities, an out-of-control Bronco, driven by 24-year-old Yuepeng Vang, of Minneapolis, struck a vehicle. The vehicle then spun out, slid backwards and struck the left rear and left side of Trooper Jared Sturgil's squad car while he was seated in the car.

"Trooper Sturgil was smart to have his seat belt back on because it could have been worse," said Lt. Steve Hanson, Minnesota State Patrol.

Sturgil was taken to the hospital with neck and back pain, but was allowed to go home.

Vang had a revoked license, it was discovered, but state patrol says alcohol was not a factor in this crash.

This incident an important safety reminder to be cautious when driving on slippery roads, according to the state patrol.

"The last thing you want to do is slam your breaks on, because you're just going to keep sliding until you hit something hard, and a lot of times, you're hitting state troopers on the side of the highway," said Lt. Hanson.

At least eight squad cars have been hit in the month of January, the state patrol said. They are urging drivers to be careful around troopers on the side of the road.
