A Maple Grove police officer, who rescued a man from a burning car earlier this week, suffered minor injuries after a light rail train hit his squad in Minneapolis Saturday morning.

Maple Grove Police Department tells KSTP Officer Jesse Mathwig was on his way back from the juvenile detention center around 1 a.m. when the light rail train hit him at 5th Avenue and 5th Street.

The passenger side of the squad car was hit broadside by the train and was severely damaged, police said. There was minor damage to the train car.

Police say Officer Mathwig is stiff and sore and did not go to the hospital.

Metro Transit Police are investigating and Maple Grove Police are planning to do an internal investigation.

Mathwig and a Hennepin County Sheriffs' deputy broke a window of a burning car and pulled the driver to safety Thursday morning on Hwy. 169. The car started on fire after it crashed into a roadside barrier in Maple Grove during a snowstorm.
