New Vikings Coordinators Talk Strategy, Coach Zimmer

The Minnesota Vikings new offensive coordinator Norv Turner and defensive coordinator George Edwards met with Twin Cities media for the first time today.

Turner was the offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns while Edwards comes to the Vikings after serving as linebackers coach with the Miami Dolphins.

Turner talked about the uncertain quarterback situation, describing it as an issue head coach Mike Zimmer and General Manager Rick Spielman are working through.

KSTP learned earlier this week quarterback Matt Cassel will likely void the second year of his contract and become a free agent. Cassel started the final four games last season.

With Christian Ponder standing as the lone quarterback currently on the Vikings roster, they'll need to acquire another, but Turner stressed it may not be through the team's first-round draft pick.

"Quarterbacks can come from a lot of different spots," Turner said. "As you just saw, a third rounder can win a Super Bowl. Gotta make sure it's a good one, wherever you get him."

Turner showed high praise for Zimmer, who is getting his first chance to be an NFL head coach. Turner said he will only offer his input as needed.

In terms of offensive strategy, Turner said balance will be key.

"We need to be good at all things. Balance is the most critical thing," he said.

Edwards said he has faced Turner enough to predict the offense will put up big numbers.

Both coordinators have a history with Zimmer. Turner used to coach against Zimmer when he was with the Washington Redskins and Zimmer was with the Dallas Cowboys. Edwards said he calls his head coach "Zim" on a regular basis.

Edwards said he is still evaluating personnel and hasn't made a decision about the type of defense he will instruct. He did not say if the Vikings will play a 3-4 or 4-3 defense.

His philosophy will be to keep things simple, and let his guys play and keep them out of bad matchups.
