A new kind of housing complex aimed at safe and affordable housing is scheduled to break ground in North Minneapolis this summer.

The person behind the project has a very personal connection. Devean George is a three-time world champion with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He is also a Minneapolis native. He played for Benilde-St. Margaret’s School and Augsburg College.

KSTP sat down for an interview with Scott Anderson, the operations director with Building Blocks, the non-profit George started.

The new building, called the Commons on Penn Avenue, will sit at the corner of Penn Avenue and Golden Valley Road.

Funds have already been raised for the apartments through a variety of government grants, but there is another fundraising deadline coming up.

Anderson stopped by our KSTP-TV studio to discuss the #15by15 campaign kickoff. Building Blocks seeks to raise $15,000 by Feb. 15 for the project.
