Jeffery Trevino is appealing the murder conviction and sentence in the killing of his wife, according to court documents.
Trevino was sentenced in November to 27 1/2 years in connection with the killing of his wife, Kira Steger, last February. Her body was found in the Mississippi River in May. The sentence handed down was nearly twice the maximum recommended by guidelines.
The judge departed from sentencing guidelines, increasing Trevino's prison time because of what he called "the cold manipulation, the selfishness and the lack of empathy in trying to cover up his crime."
A notice of appeal was filed Thursday in Ramsey County District Court.
A jury convicted Trevino last October of second-degree unintentional murder and acquitted him of second-degree intentional murder.
This is just the beginning process of the appeal; a formal petition is expected to be brought to the courts in a few days.
