Susan Segal has been the Minneapolis city attorney since 2008 and reappointed twice.
However, her current reappointment is uncertain because critics say she mishandled the city's involvement in the Vikings stadium plan.
Segal issued an opinion that the city's $150 million contribution did not trigger an automatic vote of the people despite the city charter calling for a referendum on sports facility expenditures of more than $10 million.
Segal is highly respected and her reappointment was approved at a committee hearing Monday.
The full city council will now decide on her reappointment on Friday.
