A high school in Rochester is getting a piece of Vikings history.

The football field at Mayo High School will be upgraded with synthetic turf from the Metrodome.

According to Rochester Public Schools, Mayo High alumni, along with the booster club, acquired the turf when it was removed from the Dome.

The turf was removed from the Dome as the stadium was deconstructed to make way for a new Vikings stadium.

“I think just the idea of playing on turf brings a sense of heightened excitement to both the players and the atmosphere,” Football Coach Donald Holcomb said. “I think the excitement factor of it being turf, let alone the Viking team turf, will be a great thing for both the athletes playing on it but also all the fans and community that will enjoy it.”

At this point, the turf is in storage. The turf will be installed mid-summer ahead of the fall football and soccer seasons.

According to the district, no major expenses for the purchase or installation of the turf will by paid for by the district.

The district is actually looking into the possibility of upgrading stadiums at three of its schools.
