Tyler Nanne completed a hat trick before the first period horn sounded, his four goals propelling defending state champ Edina to a 6-1 win over Stillwater in their Class AA State Hockey Quarterfinal Thursday.

Edina made it a rough debut for the Ponies in their first-ever state tournament as Nanne converted on all four shots he took in the game. His four goals in the game halved his entire season total of eight prior to the contest.

Nanne struck just 54 seconds into the first period on a fluke goal that bounced off the backglass, and the Stillwater goalie before ricocheting into the net.

He followed up five minutes later with a goal redirected in by a Stillwater defenseman.

With his legendary grandfather Lou Nanne serving as the color analyst in the telecast, Nanne completed his hat trick with about 6:30 left in the first period.

Dylan Malmquist registered a goal between Nanne's second and third to send Edina to the first intermission with a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Casey Dornbach made it 5-0 Hornets before Brandon Jungmann finally got Stillwater on the board 5:51 into the second period.

Nanne's fourth of the game closed out the scoring. It came after a shot from an Edina defenseman at the point bounced off a Stillwater defender and leaked right to Nanne who had a wide-open net to shoot at.

Edina keeper Andrew Rohkohl made 12 saves in the win as Edina out-shot Stillwater 27-13.

The Hornets now stand one win from returning to the State Championship game where they could become the first team to win back-to-back State titles since Bloomington Jefferson's three-peat in 1992-94.

A title would also add to the Hornets' state-record eight state championships.

They will face Eagan in Friday night's Class AA Semifinals.
